MOLES IN THE GARDEN

January 25, 2017 in COMMON GARDEN PROBLEMS

WHERE THERE'S MOLES THERE ARE PROBABLY JAPANESE BEETLES

White grubs eventually turn into Japanese beetles and they are a favorite food of moles. Get rid of the grubs and the moles will most likely move on as well. Look under lawn grass or flowerbed mulch for a grayish-white caterpillar-like insect. They usually lay curled in the shape of a 'C'. Buried walls are effective for keeping moles out of specific areas. Create a stone or compacted clay wall around the area you want to protect. The walls should be at least 6 inches thick and extend into the ground 2 feet. Treat the areas with an organic spray*, beneficial nematodes or dusting with Milky Spore disease (Paenibacillus popilliae).

ORGANIC OPTION TO ELIMINATE MOLES IN YOUR GARDEN

*For an organic option try castor oil, the moles will go elsewhere for meals. Mix up a spray of 3 parts castor oil to 1 part dish detergent with cayenne pepper; use 4 tablespoons of this concoction in a gallon of water, and soak the tunnels and the entrances.
